  Room in a Room (2005)

Room in a Room creates a place in which an individual is separated, private, and potentially uncomfortable. The piece provides a position of privileged listening, but disempowers communication with the outside. The structure was erected overnight underneath the skylight in the center of the gallery, which is the only light source within the structure. Sounds don’t escape the room, but sounds from outside can be heard inside. The insulation and sunlight make the room uncomfortably hot. The room’s dimensions match those of the skylight: 3ft x 3ft. One person can fit comfortably, two people fit tightly. Light escapes through cracks in the structure.
